Desperate, Peter pleads with his agent to find another publisher, to keep trying. Peter hangs up defeated. As if on cue, Celeste appears at his door demanding her alimony check. Peter, slightly panicked, tells her that he can't pay her.

She leaves in a huff, leaving Peter to survey his new surroundings: the basement of his father's house. Victor Press, the esteemed author and professor, has provided Peter a place to stay in return for helping him at Ficus University. Reluctantly, Peter finds himself immersed in his father's world, hauling boxes, cleaning, and meeting students who are surprised he is alive. Cynthia, the charming chair of the English Department, helps Peter make copies of Victor's syllabi.

BACK TO START

Peter finds himself disclosing his current situation as he melts in Cynthia”s flirtatious kindness.

A by-the-book Dean Foster convenes an English department meeting that discloses a teaching vacancy that the tenured professors aren’t willing to fill. Victor, ever the strategist, sees an opportunity to push Peter into academia, a move that would both sustain him and inspire his writing. Despite Peter's fierce resistance, Victor orchestrates events to make his son's life uncomfortable enough for him to acquiesce.

Between that and Celeste's demands for her alimony, Peter finds himself standing before a classroom of expectant students on the first day of classes. The reluctant adjunct professor, driven more by necessity than passion, begins a journey he could have never imagined.
